This is a 2-week, 2-credit experience led by UW faculty with expertise in human and veterinary medicine and is open to all graduate, professional and senior undergraduate students.
Itinerary:
- 1 day of in-person instruction (virtual option available) in Madison
- 4 nights in Hyderabad (southeastern India): community and public health from a primarily human health perspective with the NICE Foundation
- 2 nights in Ahmedabad (northwestern India): emergency mobile veterinary services with EMRI Green
- 4 nights en route and at Gir National Park and Lion Hospital: wildlife rehabilitation and management
- 2 nights in Ahmedabad: touring more advanced levels of human medical care
At every location there will be cultural tours and community experiences to help us better understand the relationship of animal, environmental and human health sectors.
UW International Academic Programs fee for this course includes travel insurance, academic credit, housing, transportation (including flight from Hyderabad to Ahmedabad), meals and entrance fees.
The international flights (ORD-HYD and AMD-ORD) are not included in the program fee.
Scholarships are available specifically for international travel by graduate and professional students. Please check on the WiSH hub for all opportunities.

Contact your trip leaders: Dr Ann Evensen ann.evensen@fammed.wisc.edu Dr Evensen has extensive international travel experience including more than 10 visits to India focused on emergency obstetric training and One Health projects. She is the Faculty Director of UW Madison’s Graduate/Professional and Capstone Certificate Programs in Global Health Online.
Dr Kurt Sladky kurt.sladky@wisc.edu Dr Sladky has extensive experience in wildlife and zoological medicine including work in India, Costa Rica and sub Saharan Africa. He oversees the Zoological Medicine section at the UW School of Veterinary Medicine.
