Emilia joined the SMPH Office of Global Health in July of 2025. She is responsible for administration of the academic programs offered by the Office of Global Health including online global health certificate programs, interdisciplinary global health field courses and the medical Spanish course. She comes to the SMPH after having spent many years teaching and doing research in various areas of applied linguistics at the university level. Her university education included numerous long-term educational experiences in countries including Spain, Ireland, Denmark, Canada and the U.S. She continues to be an avid global traveler, always looking forward to the next destination. She is passionate about helping students add a global perspective to their education through the programs offered by the Office of Global Health. Her combination of experiences in international travel and education, higher education, second language teaching and healthcare interpreting enables her to successfully navigate the many challenges involved in arranging specialized global health experiences for students. She also has education in digital design and medical interpreting and is a nationally certified Spanish-English medical interpreter. In her spare time, she enjoys using her interpreting skills to help patients with limited English proficiency successfully access and navigate the complex U.S. healthcare system.
